Poetry by Jim Landwehr: A Triage of Words

A Triage of Words

The heart of our

Monday writers’ group

is the improper

alignment of words,

herniated pronouns,

sentence fragments,

and their long-winded cousins

the run ons.

Sometimes we show and don’t tell

while the “word of the week”

spurts like an artery

and cancerous semicolons

beg for removal.

With the care of

a surgical team,

we slice, remove,

stitch and elevate

the wounded words until

the page stops bleeding

the color returns

and the patient shows the

illusory promise of

life on its own.
