Beauty: Poem by James Piatt

Ancient Rhythms by James G. Piatt

Beauty

by James Piatt

The shy white rose with soft

Petals like a lover’s lips; emits a

Magical fragrance into the

Atmosphere to sooth the hearts

Of lonely people.

A thousand weary eyes in search

For serenity in a world not so

Lovely or a harmony with itself,

Can find serenity in its vision of

Splendor.

When a gentle drizzle descends,

In the pomegranate-tinted morn,

Its face is covered with drops of

Dew causing it to blush in

Appreciation, like a baby at its

Mother’s breast.

Its beauty and velvet surface

Coaxes one to come near, but

Hidden behind its dark green

Leaves are thorns, bringing blood

To the hand that grasps its stems

Too roughly.

Beauty and danger entwined in a

Single plant of such loveliness

May appear incongruous, but is

Not. Exquisite beauty must

Always protect itself, lest it be

Plucked in its beautiful and

Youthful naive stage.
